Since 1874, The Charleston Animal Society has been a leading force in animal advocacy and the prevention of animal cruelty. The CAS campus is absolutely incredible, their staff is top-notch, and my goodness, their dogs and cats are so adorable and ready to find loving homes. It was a real honor to bake a little love for these sweet animals, and learn about the camps, volunteer opportunities and programs here at The Charleston Animal Society, . The homemade dog treat recipe we pulled together was easy and required few ingredients. In fact, the recipe was so wholesome and simple, I gave my kids a dog treat for breakfast just for fun. Is that bad-momming? Oh, who cares… The dog treats were super wholesome and we were baking some great memories!

Baking for animal shelters is one of the most unconventional yet highly rewarding baking projects you can do. These animals really need our love, and our shelters need our support. Homemade Dog Treat Recipe

These wholesome dog treats are so simple and healthy, you can try them yourself! This recipe makes a great gift or kid's baking project.

Ingredients

Dog Treats

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 tbsp baking powder
1 cup skim milk

Frosting

16 ounces cream cheese room temperature
3 tsp honey
2 tsp vanilla
3 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

Baking the Dog Treats

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Mix together all of the ingredients for the dog treats (first four ingredients in the recipe) in a large bowl.
Combine until blended. The dough will be a bit crumbly but give it a few minutes of kneading and it will come together just fine. Add a teaspoon of milk if you need a little help getting it to combine.
Roll dough out and use a cookie cutter to cut into shapes.
Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown.

Frosting

While your dog treats are cooling, combine cream cheese with honey, vanilla and cinnamon until blended.
To color the frosting, add a few drops of food coloring and blend.
Place frosting in a piping bag (or freezer bag with a small hole in the corner), and decorate-away!
